Still kings

Nile is a Metalfest vet that just sounds better each time the band comes back. Karl Sanders is a guitar god in every sense of the word _ mind-snapping solos, brutal riffs. And how these guys have sustained a career with songs about ancient Egyptian mayhem is itself reason to love them.

Acacia Strain up next

AIN’T GOING NOWHERE

So Metalfest is roaring and just survived double-barrel blast of Oceano and All Shall Perish.

Contrary to earlier reports, Oceano is not breaking up after tonight’s show. Singer Adam Warren laughed and shook his head “no” when the question was put to him after Oceano’s set.

Why should they break up? Oceano’s latest “Contagion” kills, and one of the live highlights was “Regulated Disposal of Life” from that CD. Carry on hardcore, sons.

All Shall Perish engineered a nice wall of death out on he dance; careful kids you have two more full days in that mosh pit and only so many ribs to spare. Pics and vids to come

Tick, tick, tick……

Yeah so, we were supposed to get this thing going Friday, but today’s release of the fest schedule just got me revved. With Acacia Strain, All That Remains, and Killswitch Engage, you’ve got to love the heavy Masshole dominance across the top each night. And the way Metalfest is sticking to its roots_ Black Dahlia Murder, God Forbid, Bane, Nile_ is also a good sign. In some years, bands with more mainstream recognition_ Megadeth, Ministry, Danzig_ had headlining slots, which was cool, but typically not as intense as when the deeper underground bubbles up to take over. The best part of Metalfest is usually not seeing the bands you liked in the first place but making new discoveries. How many people heard Opeth, Lamb of God, of Dragonforce for the first time at Metalfest?

Those who want to get their metal on early can start at 5 p.m. Thursday at the Metalfest kick-off part featuring Thy Will Be Done and a bunch of others.

Then it’s 1 p.m. til the wee hour Friday, Saturday, Sunday.

Feel free to weigh in on must-sees from this year’s line-up.

Let the metal begin. Starting Friday, we’ll be filing reports from Metalfest, mixing up reviews, interviews, and other assorted observations. Check back for pictures, videos, and stories as the New England Metal and Hardcore Festival hits its adolescence.
